Wine Marlborough - NZ-UK Link Foundation - John Avery Wine Scholarship 2012

29 January 2012

In 2009 Wine Marlborough and the NZ-UK Link Foundation, together with John Avery MW, agreed to establish an annual wine industry scholarship. This provided for a wine industry professional from the Marlborough region of New Zealand to travel to the United Kingdom to study the United Kingdom wine business; and the next year a wine industry professional from the United Kingdom would visit New Zealand to study the Marlborough wine industry.

The purpose of the scholarship is to increase mutual understanding of the wine industry in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom by each country’s wine growers and marketers. At the same time it would further the education and development of wine industry professionals who demonstrate potential as leaders in their respective wine industries.

The 2011 New Zealand recipient, Marcus Pickens from Wine Marlborough Ltd says:  “How can one best describe this experience?  There is only one way – it was the experience of a lifetime.”

In 2012, the recipient will be chosen from wine industry professionals in the United Kingdom who are British citizens and who have had at least five years’ experience in the wine industry.  The recipient will spend three to six weeks in Marlborough, New Zealand, studying that region’s wine industry and will be hosted by Wine Marlborough. He/she will be placed at a Marlborough winery or series of wineries, experiencing first hand local viticulture standards, learning about the sub regional differences, the array of varieties produced, quality standards and the export competitiveness.

Applications for the 2012 scholarship close 31 March 2012. For further details and an application form
